From the Diary of Britt: While I was a lucky kid and passed those awkward preteen years without braces or retainers, my senior year of college my parents thought it would be a good idea to see an orthodontist before I graduated/got kicked off their health care. I thought worst case scenario I'd have to wear a retainer, instead I got braces for 10 months. The second my braces were put on I started craving everything on the "Do Not Eat" list; gum, popcorn, and -randomly- caramel apples. I tried to ignore it and went to my Film Adaptation class. Before the film started, I told my friend about my craving and got an appropriate "Um, that's weird" response. What was screening that day? American Splendor and the opening scene features kids trick-or-treating for CARAMEL APPLES. The world was playing a cruel joke on me, I was sure of it. After not having a caramel apples for years, suddenly it was all I wanted. But you know what? I never cheated on my braces diet and when I finally got them off I ran to the nearest confectionery store and bought a caramel apple. Sometimes waiting for your Fat Kid treat makes it that much better!
Caramel Apple Jacks
Now the Apple Jacks commercial would have you believe that Apple Jacks "Just don't taste like apple!" To that we say "LIE!" They do have a hint of crisp apple flavor. Even better, Apple Jacks don't have a skin or a core so nothing will get in the way of your snacking!
First thing you need- a huge (microwave safe) bowl. You'll need it when you mix everything together.

Soon this will all be mixed together... |
Melt butter and mix in a bowl with the marshmallows. Put bowl in the microwave and heat for another minute or until marshmallows become gooey enough to mix.
Then, add in the whole box of Apple Jacks and half a box of Rice Krispies in to marshmallow mix. It'll be tough to mix it all together, so try to add a little and stir then add a little more and so on...
After you've gained massive muscle strength from mixing let the mixture sit. Seriously, just chill out until the marshmallows cool down otherwise the mixture will stick to your hands.

Be PATIENT! |
Now, it's time to get your hands dirty! Grab about a handful of the mix and roll in your palms until you get an apple/sphere shape. Try to compact the mix into solid spheres- this will help it keep shape!
Place the rolled Apple Jacks onto a sheet of wax paper and drizzle caramel sauce over the top. if you have braces, then switch out the caramel for peanut butter. I recommend fast drying peanut syrup- less time to wait. Give the caramel (or peanut shell) time to dry and then EAT!
Love,
Britt
PS- Feel free to try this recipe with other cereals too. Just remember the golden Apple Jack rule from those rad commercials- Eat What You Like!
